macOS 10.14 Mojave doesn’t bring a fresh round of EFI firmware updates

I have now had a chance to analyse the EFI firmware updates included in the macOS 10.14 Mojave installer: surprisingly, it doesn’t bring a fresh round of EFI firmware updates, at least not for Macs which don’t have a T2 chip.

If your Mac was updated to macOS 10.13.6 High Sierra, or you installed the July Security Update 2018-004 for Sierra, then that updated your EFI firmware to the version required for Mojave. This doesn’t apply to iMac Pro or MacBook Pro 2018 models with T2 chips, which receive their firmware updates using a different mechanism.

I have updated both my Mojave installation notes and my listing of latest EFI firmware versions to reflect this.

After updating my MacBook Pro (13″, Touch Bar, 2017 aka MacBookPro14,2 to 10.14.1 Public Beta 1 (18B45d), it has Boot-ROM-Version: 183.0.0.0.0, in bash: EFI Version: MBP142.88Z.F000.B00.1808170632

  That’s apparently an update from 0178 B00 to F000 B00, which is interesting to say the least.
  You’ll understand why I don’t list EFI firmware versions from beta releases of macOS!

    I updated to the public beta 1 as well, got the same version. Is there anything I can do to restore it to the older version? Thank you.

      I don’t know of any way to downgrade your EFI firmware, I’m afraid, without visiting a Genius Bar.

10.14.1 renamed all firmware on all Mojave supported macs, but whether it actually changed the firmware code is anybody’s guess.

Hi. I have seen that the Mojave firmware has allowed Mac Pro 4,1 and 5,1 to boot from NVMe drives when they coudln’t before so how can there be no firmware update? I am confused.

  There are two groups of firmware updates which don’t get listed in the installer: those for T2-equipped models, and for cheesegrater Mac Pros. As I don’t have a Mac Pro which can run Mojave, I have to rely on reports from those who do.
  However, what I wrote stands: many of us were expecting EFI firmware updates all round with 10.14, but they aren’t there, and occurred in 10.13.6, which was also a vital firmware update for Mac Pros. Without it, I gather, you can’t install Mojave.

Just got this after upgrading to 10.14.4 beta 2 on MacMini 2014 (now boot rom 236.0.0.0.0)
