Solutions to Saturday Mac riddles 246

I hope that you enjoyed Saturday’s Mac Riddles, episode 246. Here are my solutions to them.

1: Once a Latin American dance on 445, it’s a year older than the Mac, and now the shared standard.

SMB

Once a Latin American dance (Samba, an open-source implementation once used by Apple) on 445 (its TCP port for servers), it’s a year older than the Mac (originally developed by IBM in 1983), and now the shared standard (it has replaced AFP as the standard for Mac sharing).

2: From 6 until 11 it shared files on 548, but is now on its way out.

AFP

From 6 (first introduced in System 6 in classic Mac OS, in AppleShare) until 11 (it was deprecated in macOS Big Sur) it shared files (what it did) on 548 (its TCP/IP port), but is now on its way out (support is being removed steadily from macOS).

3: From solar origins forty years ago, it became popular on 2049 in Unix before declining after 2000.

NFS

From solar origins forty years ago (developed by Sun, its first version was used in-house from 1984), it became popular on 2049 (its TCP/UDP port number) in Unix (it did) before declining after 2000 (since when it has been dropped by IBM and others).

All three are network file systems that have been supported on Macs.

I look forward to your putting alternative cases.
