Ulbow version 1.4 is now a Universal App

Ulbow version 1.4 brings some internal changes with macOS version detection which fix a minor bug, but most of all is the first full release as a Universal App, superceding both 1.3 and 1.3u. This should run natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs, on all versions of macOS from Sierra to Big Sur beta 3.

It’s now available from here: ulbow14
from Downloads above, from its Product Page, and via its auto-update mechanism.

If you’re running an Intel Mac and have any problems, please let me know. I’ll leave the Intel-only version 1.3 available on its Product Page in case you’d prefer to revert to that.

Hi Howard, just another big THANK YOU for your excellent apps/tools. I used your latest Ulbow 1.4 to successfully find why my MacPro6,1 (6-core, 64 GB, 1TB, 10.15.6) very frequently crashes (kernal panic) while going to sleep or during sleep and then reboots. I had discovered that if I quit Apple Mail before putting the MacPro to sleep that doing so reduced the frequency of KPs but did not eliminate them. Mid-morning it happened again and this time I noted the exact time. Using Ulbow 1.4 in a 7min window around that time and using the chart function, I easily found “PMRD: Sleep failure code 0x00000000 0x00000014” in Ulbow’s window. Searching the Internet for this code I found many references to the crash with various versions of Catalina and the recommended workaround–disable Power Nap in the Energy Preference Pane. After doing that and leaving Apple Mail open, so far no more going to sleep or during sleep KP crashes.

Thanks Howard,

i’ve tried both 1.3 & 1.4 on big sur and all i see is time stamps and no log entries.

i’ve followed the instructions in one of your articles from this year
https://eclecticlight.co/2020/06/17/what-caused-that-kernel-panic-how-to-use-the-log-in-diagnosis/

And i’ve selected all the get and show entries in the view menu yet still see just a column on the left of time stamps despite over 1000 logs being shown in the line with the get log button as being retrieved.

am i doing something wrong, is this a known issue with big sur?

i’m running 11.0 Beta (20A5374i)

  I presume that you haven’t set up Ulbow’s preferences? This is detailed in the docs provided, and I walk through it at the start of this article.
  AFAIK, Ulbow is completely compatible with Big Sur and Apple Silicon.

    i had opened ulbow, closed then moved the plist then opened.
    
    didn’t realise plists could be overwritten with old ones if replaced from the ~library.

Hi everyone,
I used Ulbow 1.4 with Big Sur 11.1.
It always ends with application not responding (loading last two days of Time Machine Logs which is enabled and once a day) and “eating” all the available memory (64GB)

  What settings are you using to ensure that you only get TM logs? Has it occurred to you that what is probably happening is that Ulbow is getting two days of the whole unified log, which is probably several million entries?
  If you want to look at TM, why not use T2M2, which is designed for that purpose?

    I usually use T2M2.
    I used Ulbow to look for logs about Bluetooth (which is not working well in Big Sur) and to learn how to use it I started with Time Machine logs to compare with T2M2.
    I thought that the application was loading data in memory only after the filter is applied.

      Ah: if you want to examine a period of more than a minute or two of log extracts, you will need to apply a Predicate which limits the number of log entries obtained. That’s how T2M2 can cover such long periods. Without a Predicate, the log returns millions of entries.
