Dear Howard,

First off, a galactic sized bundle of thanks for such a fascinating site, both in terms of Art curation and Mac wrangling. Utterly wonderful!!!

Because of a full undefined 10.14 macOS corruption on an iMac (all data backed up, but interminable lockups, crashes, hangs), I decided to play with Catalina on a bootable HD. Actually apart from a sleep issue (solved with amphetamine [ app not drug 😉 ]), things have been much better than before, with one major exception. iCloud Drive, which from the beta release notes still has major issues. I know the location of the documents in ~/Library had changed, and that you’ve updated Cirrus to handle it. But when I run Cirrus > Open Browser — the window is completely empty. Now lots of files are not showing up, but there are files and folders present in the Finder.Not sure there is much you can do until Apple fix iCloud (they’re leaving it awfully late…), but just thought I’d provide some feedback and thanks.

  Thank you for your kind words.
  You should find iCloud Drive is now largely fixed, although cleaning the mess up is taking time. If you have Desktop & Documents in iCloud Drive, I recommend that you turn that off. Then clean up all the superfluous folders that have appeared in iCloud Drive, and sometimes its even worth disconnecting that system from iCloud before reconnecting it, in order to let things settle.

    Thanks for the helpful reply. I still see a totally non-functional iCloud Drive in beta 19A546d. I never enable “Documents and Desktop”, and it is not enabled now according to the Preferences pane. I’ve tried to turn iCloud Drive off, reboot, clean out any lingering files, then turn on again, but most folders and files just never appear. The fact that Cirrus cannot see anything made me look in ~/Library — ~/Library/CloudStorage folder is completely empty; ~/Library/Mobile\ Documents has many folders but they are mostly empty. I do live in China, but iCloud works well here without a VPN. I submitted feedback to Apple with as much info as I can find.
    
    Offtopic, but it would be wonderful if a publisher transformed some of your article series into books, Dante’s Inferno series is brilliant!!!!

      Thank you. That is odd. An older version of Cirrus would still look in the old Mobile Documents folder, although from the sounds of it that isn’t likely to be of much help either.
      Sadly, the Divine Comedy is coming to an end in the next couple of weeks, but I’m lining up a successor series just now.

This is a clean install, so why there is anything in Mobile Documents is a mystery to me too (i first installed beta 5, not sure when the “iCloud shuffle” occurred).

All good things must come to an end (except if it was turned into a book, then it would live for ever 😉 ). Very much looking forward to whatever you will turn you minds eye to next…

  I’m just finishing an update to Cirrus which allows you to change the default start path used by the browser. It should be available in Downloads, its Product Page and the auto-update mechanism around 2100 UTC today, and will be officially released in the morning. Thanks for prompting the idea.

    Thank you, just ran Cirrus trying both new and old iCloudPath15 defaults paths, but the Browser is empty in both cases. I think the current problems with iCloud Drive in the beta really preclude any reasonable intervention till Apple fix whatever is broken.
    
    My beta feedback has now been processed as a duplicate (more than 10) and it is still open as of 19A546d…

I’m a new user trying to diagnose why Desktop and Documents are not updating to iCloud. The “bird’ process runs continually at high CPU percentage. My problem is that although I have ticked the “Remove Privacy” box and entered my password as requested, privacy is not being removed and the tickbox remains empty after I get through.

  Which version of macOS is this, please?
  Is your Mac running a fairly standard setup, or is it customised, e.g. SIP disabled?
  Unfortunately as this is an undocumented and unsupported command, if Apple has removed or changed it, there isn’t any alternative.

    I’ve confirmed this morning that it does still work in 10.14.6, fully updated, even on a T2 Mac. Will check on Catalina later today.

  I’m afraid that this doesn’t work in Catalina, as Apple has changed or removed the undocumented command. There’s nothing that I can do about that until someone discovers a workaround – more info tomorrow.
