Apple has released Sonoma 14.2, and security updates for Ventura and Monterey

Apple has just released updates to bring macOS Sonoma to version 14.2, together with security updates bringing Ventura to 13.6.3 and Monterey to 12.7.2. Apple has also released standalone updates for Safari 17.2, for Ventura and Monterey.

The update for Sonoma is about 2.7 GB for Apple silicon Macs (slightly less for M3 models) and 2.1 GB for Intel models.

Sonoma versions are now reunited with a single build, 23C64, for Intel, M1, M2 and M3 models.

For Apple silicon Macs, iBoot ‘firmware’ is updated to version 10151.61.4, and T2 Macs are updated to 2020.61.1.0.0 (iBridge: 21.16.2057.0.0,0).

Apple gives an extensive list of new and improved features in this update to Sonoma. These include:

  • Enhanced PDF AutoFill.
  • Messages introduces Contact Key Verification to ensure messaging with only those intended, also stickers and catch-up arrows.
  • Weather sees several enhancements in information on precipitation, wind, and new widgets.
  • Clock has multiple named timers with presets, and Recents.
  • Apple Music has an enhanced Favourites Songs Playlist, and Focus disabling Listening History.
  • Shazam Music Recognition is available even when wearing AirPods.
  • Additional Sámi keyboard layouts.

Security release notes are already available. These list 21 fixes for macOS 14.2, including one kernel bug, and two in WebKit. None of the vulnerabilities is believed to have been exploited yet. For those updating to 13.6.3 there are 12 fixes, and just 10 for 12.7.2.

Later this evening I’ll be explaining what has changed in 14.2.
