Q&A: Lost preferences

Q I have been experiencing problems trying to get my settings in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences to stick properly. Following advice, I have tried to trash its preference settings file, but cannot find it in either ~/Library/Preferences, or /Library/Preferences. Which file is it now in?

A Each time Apple releases a major new version of OS X, it rejigs the location of property list files (.plist) containing various system preferences. In recent versions of OS X, you should find the Energy Saver settings stored in the file named com.apple.PowerManagement.plist in /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration, where you will also find settings for wired and wireless networking, and more.

Comments Audio system and device settings are now found in /Library/Preferences/Audio, and those for App Store apps are best located using their respective folders in ~/Library/Containers.

More details on these property lists are here.
