Q I have just switched ISP to Plusnet, and the new modem-router which they sent me is causing problems from the start. Although my iPhone and a Mac running OS X 10.9.5 are unaffected, my old Mac which is still running OS X 10.6.8 keeps freezing. What is wrong?
A No router which is properly pre-configured should ever be capable of causing this. Once you have fixed it, you should complain bitterly to your new ISP for their serious error.
To fix this, you will need to enter the router’s ‘expert mode’ configuration using your browser. You should:
- point your browser at the router (preferably using a non-freezing Mac!) in expert mode, by going to http://192.168.1.x/expert_user.html where x is the address of your router;
- in Advanced Setup, go to LAN, and ensure that IGMP Snooping is unchecked;
- in Advanced Setup, go to IPv6 Autoconfig, and ensure that Enable MLD Snooping is unchecked;
- then click on the Save/Apply button, and close your browser.
If that does not restore proper service, you will need to contact your ISP’s help service.
