Lambs’ tales

Over the last few days, the first lambs of the season have been born here.

Hampshire Down lambs just a few days old, Appuldurcombe Farm, Isle of Wight, 22 Feb 2015.

These are (we think) Hampshire Down sheep, seen here in the local creche. We just love their black Wellie boots.

You may ‘aaah’ now.

(An aside: we have found it very hard to distinguish the different breeds of sheep around here, as there is no thorough book in print which covers all the breeds found in the UK. Unfortunately the few books we have found are patchy in their coverage, and their photos leave a lot to be desired. If you can be tempted to write a really good guide, please do so, and we will happily field test it.)
