I have noticed that the colours in scans are not particularly accurate when compared with the originals. How can I improve them?

I tried to remove some colour profiles using the Finder, but they still appear in the menu. Is there a better way?
Q A recent photo of me on a blog looks fine when browsed using Safari, but Firefox and Google Chrome misrender it, making me look like a boiled lobster. How can I correct that?
