He worked as an assistant to Holman Hunt for 15 years, but also painted spectacular watercolours.
He painted some of the most wonderful landscapes of the nineteenth century, but today is almost forgotten.
Their purpose was to encourage speculation and debate as to what their narrative is.
Although they followed narrative conventions, they were unusual for showing static tableaux rather than action.
