Brother of the architect Richard Morris Hunt, he painted portraits of the ‘Boston Brahmins’, then landscapes in Barbizon style.

Since they were first shown at the end of the 1800s, Tissot’s 350+ paintings of the life of Christ have been controversial, but much loved.
He worked as an assistant to Holman Hunt for 15 years, but also painted spectacular watercolours.
He painted some of the most wonderful landscapes of the nineteenth century, but today is almost forgotten.
Their purpose was to encourage speculation and debate as to what their narrative is.
Although they followed narrative conventions, they were unusual for showing static tableaux rather than action.
