Apple has released Monterey 12.0.1, Big Sur and Catalina security updates

As announced last week, Apple has just released the first full public release version of macOS Monterey, 12.0.1. This should be available as a full install for those running earlier versions of macOS, and as an update to those with MacBook Pro M1 Pro and M1 Max models currently running 12.0. Released with Monterey is Big Sur 11.6.1, which is a security update, and hopefully around now Catalina Security Update 2021-007.

I’ll post further details here as they emerge.

Because this is a busy day on Apple’s update servers, not all updates may be accessible around the whole world: patience may be required for the right update to appear for you.

It may be worthwhile to mention the build number of 21A559, which is the same as the final beta release of 12.0.1 from roughly last week. So people who ran the beta likely don’t need to update (and it won’t be offered to them). But some might want to turn off the beta profile in System Preferences, lest they start getting 12.1 betas soon.

  Thank you. That wasn’t actually a beta-release, but RC2. And yes, the build numbers are identical so if you’re already running RC2, you’ve got the release version already. I have previously given detailed instructions for unhitching from the beta programmes, including the command line tool if the normal method doesn’t work.

Adding to Pico’s comment, the 13″ mid-2012 MacBook Pro (MacBookPro9,2) also received a firmware update to version 424.0.0.0.0.

  There are a few model IDs that aren’t listed in the raw EFI Firmware update source files since they get the same firmware as their sibling models. Howard has these gaps worked out and properly includes them in the official listings.

    Ah, that explains it, my macmini8,1 rebooted with the system chime a couple of times during the Catalina update, which I was assuming was firmware.

  Probably not. The pre-install version may last longer. It’s not predictable.

just to share we you (and your readers)
I had trouble installing Monterey on a 2019 iMac running Big Sur
the first attempt – hung after about 1 ½ hours – I thought it was nearly done when the progress bar just stopped moving – waited a couple hours and hit the power button.

powered back up and brought the login screen right up – logged in -and it went to the exact position it left at when it hung — waited maybe an hour then reset

tried recovery mode – aha that seemed to be better – made it much further – got to 2 minutes remaining – black screen rebooted and brought a progress bar up that went to nearly 90% and hung there.

Took shower – watched a football game came back… still hung

Final shot – DISCONNECTED all peripherals and tried recovery mode – presto change-o the world is now good took about 50 minutes to install Monterey — well mostly good

iCloud email is messed up and it appears reindexing is going to work – (rebuild did not)
unfortunately I have several non iCloud email accounts…..

thanks for a great site – helped thinking outside the box so to speak.

    I spoke to soon on iCloud mail — it still is in a constant connecting state — via the cavity window – I get msg headers but no message body — all other email accounts are fine — (fortunately I do not use iCloud mail very much )
    I did a rebuild and reindex everything —

      thanks – I have since spent 3 hours with Apple support – it appears AVAST is giving some customers nightmares with Monterey — Avast seems to have put its own network connects in which iCloud was not happy about — I was able to restore to earlier times and removed Avast – now Mail and Monterey are happy. as I type this I am backing up this moment in time before I go forward —– thanks again it wasn’t till I got to T2 support that they realize I had Avast and they were seeing many Avast cases. ( I just thought it was MAIL – Ha!)
