macOS 10.15 Catalina Supplemental Update is now available (updated)

Apple has today released macOS 10.15 Catalina Supplemental Update, which contains bug fixes and other improvements. It’s just under a gigabyte in size, which is quite substantial for such an early update before the first full update to Catalina.

The update identifies itself not as a Supplemental Update, but as “macOS 10.15 Update” which seems unusually non-specific.

There are no changes in the build numbers of any of Apple’s bundled apps. Minor changes in /System/Library include updates to:

iCloudIDAuthentication.bundle
iCloudIDNotification.bundle
Setup Assistant.app
Calendar Setup Assistant Plugin
LaunchServices Setup Assistant Plugin
QuickLook Setup Assistant Plugin
Spotlight Setup Assistant Plugin
iCloudDelegate Setup Assistant Plugin
GameKit Framework
AOS Accounts Frameworks
GameCenter Frameworks
OS Installer Framework.

According to Mr.Macintosh, these improve installation reliability when storage space is low, ensures that Setup Assistant can complete properly, resolves and issue accepting iCloud terms and conditions with multiple iCloud accounts, and improves saving of Game Center data when playing offline.

There are no signs of firmware updates, or any changes to security data files, apart a strange duplication of XProtect bundles. Following this update, there are now two different XProtect bundles:

a writeable bundle on the Data volume in System/Library/CoreServices named XProtect.bundle, which contains version 2106, with the addition of a database file named gk.db in its resources. This also has a symbolic link from the System folder, at /System/Library/CoreServices
a read-only folder named “XProtect.bundle 1” which was installed with this update, and is on the System volume at /System/Library/CoreServices. This also appears to contain version 2106, but lacks the database file gk.db in its resources.

It’s hard to know whether the latter of those is an installation error, a fix for a bug, or something new altogether.

I don’t yet have a direct download link, but when I have located one I will post it here.

There are currently no signs of any security updates for earlier versions of macOS.

The annoying bug that leaves .webloc files and some folders with generic white document icons was not fixed.

  Have you tried restarting in Safe Mode, then restarting back in regular mode?

    Thank you for your reply. I only used recover mode, ran Disk FIrst Aid, and then restarted — without benefit. I installed the latest update last night, without any change. Having read your last several emails, I’ve been planning to try safe mode. What I find interesting is that I’ve never seen exactly this issue before. Webloc files are all generic white file icons, even those on disks that weren’t attached to my Mac when I updated and older versions on Time Machine.
    
    I don’t think the webloc files themselves are damaged, as I can Quick Look them all properly. Changing the default browser to Firefox and creating a new webloc file from Firefox also creates a file with a generic white icon. Doing a Get Info on this new webloc from Firefox still shows Safari as the default program, but when I double click these Firefox created files, they do properly open in Firefox.
    
    A number of users have reported similar issues on Apple’s support forum. A small percentage of my folder icons are also generic white file icons, but there aren’t many, and I’ve just pasted in folder icons from another folder that displays properly. New folders have the correct icon, too.
    
    I’ll let you know whether using Safe Mode is helpful.

    I tried safe mode. For some reason, it started up very quickly, but I could tell that a lot of apps hadn’t loaded. The white generic icons were present. I rebooted into regular mode, and there was no imrprovement. This is not the worst problem I’ve ever had, but it is a mystery.

I recently ran into some problems installing 10.15 GM. The install setup was a bootable installer disk and an external disk to install 10.15 onto. After several attempts (which failed with e.g. “Cannot find file needed” and “Cannot be installed on this computer” MacbookPro11,3 IS compatible) It finally installed. Stability was better in Safe Mode. The Update here resulted again in a “”Cannot be installed on this computer” screen. Restarting to the installer results in the same error and Restarting in safe mode shutsdown the MBP before anything is displayed (keyboard lights and blackness follows)
I’m not to happy with the 10.15 GM experience so far.

  It would probably be better to go for the release rather GM version – there may well be differences, and given the installation fixes in the latest update, a release version downloaded now should behave better than the original.

I also see no download link but I’m running the named build. What I did do it run dosdude1’s Catalina Patcher which can download a new Install macOS Catalina.app

  It should save someone a few seconds that Catalina Patcher puts the installer application in the Downloads folder and not in the Applications folder as one might expect. It is version 15.0.34 which is clearly newer than the original release.
