Consolation 3.3 fixes a bug with Catalina

When working on my new log browser Ulbow, I came across a bug in Consolation version 3.2 which prevents it from displaying the full list of log fields when running in Catalina. Instead, it displays the list for Sierra, which is far shorter.

This new version 3.3 of Consolation fixes this bug, and has been built using Xcode 11. It’s available from here: consolation33
from Updates above, from its Product Page, and via its auto-update mechanism.

I found the builtin Console.app is not very reliable. It doesn’t show my kernel extension logs sometimes. After I run Consolation.app once, Console.app can show the logs correctly. Consolation.app fits my requirements 99% of time and works great, but sometimes I need the auto-refresh feature. I just want to know if it is a known bug in Console.app. Thanks!

  I don’t know: I very seldom use Console!
  However, as that log is one of the old text-based logs, and Consolation only access the unified log, I suspect this may be coincidence, not cause and effect.

Sir, I followed the Consolation instructions, then reread to uncheck : signposts and activities. So I did, and with them checked or not, I get zip, blank.

iMac 17,1 Mojave 1014.6, I had a screen freeze at 02:14:40 AM. So in Consolation 3.3 I checked 1 system, 2 other tex, all blank, none saved, none filter. 3 Style basic+ or starters+, 4 checked info messages, signpost messages, 5 Show logs, leave unchecked signposts and activities. Period: 0, Start 2019-10-20, 02:14:35, the the same date and 02:15:15 {Enter}{Get Log}

I get nothing. What am I doing wrong?

  This is so weird, there doesn’t seem to be a log record for that time of the morning. later in the day around 5AM I found log records, but nothing before or right after the system freeze.

  Just above the output view in the window is an area which contains the parameters which Consolation uses to get the log. When you click on the Get Log button, that text appears as a series of entries in square brackets []. Can you copy and paste the text shown there in a comment here, please?

  It does look as if that section of log hasn’t been saved to disk.
  What I’d do now is try an earlier start time, and a later end time, until you get log entries before and after the gap. Then you’ll be able to see what event preceded the loss of log, and how the entries resume when the log returns.

Have you ever heard what causes a log period to not be written, or would a freeze delete the log on occasions? Thank you for your advice and attention.

  Successful log records require the log system to be functioning, which writes them into memory, from where they’re written out to disk. There’s a whole series of system functions, from logging itself to writing to disk, which must be functional for it to work.
  Have you located the last log entries before the silence? And the first ones when the log resumes? Those are critical to explaining what has gone wrong.

Mr. Oakley, I seem to have logs beginning at 10-21-19 07:53:32 forward, but nothing back to at least 10-09-19. I didn’t try further back. If you see anything in this, I would appreciate your advice. I’ve never heard of my iMac not recording a log, but I found none before 07:53:32 on 10-21-19.

Skipping over the previous conversation, is it possible to search for the term “system boot” in the syslog results from Consolation333 without copying results into textedit and searching there?

  Provided that you click on the view containing the log extract first (to make it ‘active’), the normal Find command in the Edit menu provides standard text search of the log extract.
  You can also perform live filtering of the log extract on the basis of terms in the filter popup menu in the Filter section. That displays all log entries in the current extract containing the term selected in that popup menu, in their eventMessage field, and can support Regex as well as plain text.

Mr. Oakley, I have determined that the application I am using is freezing, not the system. Does not sound good as I need the application. Anyway, what would be a term to show in the system logs that appears when any application freezes?

  There isn’t a standard log entry for that. Normally developers look for spindumps, which are quite separate from the log. I strongly recommend that you raise this with the app’s developers: they should work with you to identify the cause and fix it. Sadly, a lot of apps just quietly lock themselves up and become unresponsive.

Have moved my iMac and other drives to Catalina. I am still experiencing an occasional shutdown and or restart at night, after I leave the iMac in sleep mode. I tracked one down w Consolation last night. I spontaneous shut down last night at 04:45:08. I manually rebooted at 05:19:53 same morning. The only thing going on in the system log is a lot of Mail app stuff: a lot of iMap instructions and Apple Mail. These mail entries seem to go on all night. They stop when I rebooted at 05:19:53.

So I have deleted all mailboxes from Apple Mail. Will re-enter them soon.
Why would mail do this? The machine stays on all day, its just at idle at night that it shuts down at odd times.

  Clearing your mailboxes might do the trick.
  When your Mac is asleep and can shut down unintentionally, is the Mail app left open? If so, try quitting the app before it goes to sleep, and see if that helps.
  If you’re already doing that, it suggest that the problem may lie in any iCloud mail sharing. Do you have Mail ticked in the iCloud pane? It’s possible that maintaining the iCloud sync during the period of sleep might be the cause then.

    Thank you, will remember to quit mail. Ive never seen such massive logs on mail and imap mail. I have deleted all accounts and re-added, will see if anything changes. TBDetermined.
