Supplemental update for MacBook Pro 2018 models with Touch Bar

Apple has just released a Supplemental Update for the latest (2018) MacBook Pro model with Touch Bar. It’s available from the App Store, or for separate download from this page.

Apple hasn’t yet revealed what the update does, apart from saying that it “improves the stability and reliability”. I suspect that this contains security fixes, in particular in relation to its T2 chip, and will update this article when I know details.

As the update is 1.3 GB in size, there is obviously quite a lot in it.

It is not intended for current MacBook Pro models which don’t have a Touch Bar, though.

  Where is that statement quoted from, please? It should be attributed, as Apple has not provided any information in a release note or security release notes which detail any of that, as far as I can see at present.

    The same website has verified that there is a performance improvement under heavy loads (newer story at the same place).

Apple has released a statement apologizing for the i9 MBP overheating issue and saying this fixes it, but I haven’t found it yet. Rene Richie read it on his podcast today. I also understand from a user that it fixed a problem with not having a working “Accept” button to approve a Kernel Extension.

  Maybe it was just an email to selected journalists.

In sum, in addition to whatever else, it addressed an issue with throttling under loads, which was quickly discovered and which Apple acknowledged. The initial speculation was that Apple had once again backed themselves into that proverbial thermal corner, but the fix (which I think is in firmware) seems to have been effective. As a glass-half-full kind of guy, I applaud Apple for the quick response.
